Ensuring our activities have a positive impact on the world around us is an essential part of the way we do business, and in 2019 we continued to make strides in our ambitious sustainability agenda.

Attracting and retaining the best talent is an ongoing focus. The opening of a new National Skills and Safety Park, a dedicated and purpose-built facility from where we deliver industry-leading practical and classroom-based training, is providing even more opportunities for our teams to learn and develop so we are best able to support the UK’s infrastructure ambitions. Alongside this, the establishment of a Resourcing Hub made up of inhouse recruitment experts means we are even better placed to source the best and most diverse talent.

With the health and safety of our people and all those we work with at the very heart of our business we were delighted to win the Mineral Product’s Association Award for Occupational Health and Safety in recognition of our continuous efforts in this area.

Working with our local communities and collaborating with a range of organisations saw Tarmac employees deliver 10,500 hours of volunteering activity. Ranging from STEM support in classrooms across the country, through to supporting the development and management of wildlife reserves and national parks, we’re exceptionally proud of all the efforts of our people to support activities which are really making a difference. Our own focus on responsible land management and stewardship was recognised by the European Aggregates Association which named us the winner of the Restoration Award at the Sustainable Development Awards. To date we have created 1,842 hectares of priority habitat which is a fantastic achievement.

We continue to make strides to reduce our own carbon emissions as well as support our customers with new sustainable solutions and expertise to help them with their own commitments and challenges. The launch of our rubber modified asphalt, for example, was a UK first, recycling material from waste tyres that would otherwise be destined for landfill. This focus on resource efficiency extends across the business where we have reused or recycled 7.9 million tonnes of waste from other sectors, including over 900,000 tonnes of old road surface into new products.

As well as delivering a wide range of projects for customers and clients across the UK – including the resurfacing of the world-famous Silverstone racetrack to the exacting standards of Formula 1 – we developed our own portfolio with work beginning on a new asphalt plant and manufacturing hub in the Midlands, as well as the UK’s largest construction aggregates terminal.

There is much to look forward to as the business maintains its passion, focus and drive to continually build on the progress made towards our sustainability goals, and we’d like to thank our employees and all those who challenge and support us on this important journey.
